These classes are open to gymnasts by invitation only. Class members are usually discovered in their Kindergarten/1st Grade, Novice I, Novice II or Intermediate recreational classes. These gymnasts stand out in their classes for their focus, strength, flexibility, physical coordination and the desire to enter into the competitive level of gymnastics. Age ranges for this group are generally from six to twelve years old. Trainer Classes generally meet twice a week for an hour and a half per class. Proper etiquette, body conditioning, shaping and flexibility  prepares the gymnasts to enter our team programs. Attention is also paid to the USAG skills which further prepares the gymnasts to enter our Team program.

191_Tops_07TOPS

“TOPS” is the Talent Opportunity Program supported by the USA Gymnastics Federation. High priority is placed on identifying children with gymnastics potential and extending training opportunities to their coaches with the National USA staff. Emphasis is on technical progressions, dance, nutrition and sports psychology. During the summer, gymnasts are evaluated on physical abilities at the state or regional level. These dates are set by the regional TOPs manager in conjunction with the National Elite Program Chairperson. From this evaluation, athletes are invited to participate in the National TOPs test that is conducted each Fall. At this National Testing, gymnasts will be evaluated on the same physical abilities tests, along with some basic gymnastics skills. The highest ranking athletes are then invited to participate in the National TOPs Training camp which takes place at the end of each year.

The goals for this program are to:

Identify young gymnasts between 7 to 11 years old that are not currently seeking or training for elite or international level competition.

Identify deficiencies in fitness and skill factors that can be determined by scientific testing and interaction with regional and national staff coaches. These deficiencies will be communicated to both the athlete and the coach for remedial work.

Enhance the information flow and educational opportunities to talented athletes, their parents or guardians, and their coaches to help improve the athlete’s training. GGA coach Cassi Ballard, conducts the testing for GGA’s TOPS program. Judy also holds the highly-regarded position for Georgia as the TOPS State Manager.
